Split is one of the oldest cities in the Dalmatia region on the shores of the Adriatic sea in Croatia. It's history dates back to 4th centurey BC, about 2400 years ago when it was a greek colony. The old town dates to the construction of Diocletan Palace, in 305 ad built to be a retirement place for Emperor Diocletan. Large sections of the Palace survive today making Split a jewel of the Roman Empire with narrow streets presenting a range of cultural treasures.
Kliss Fortress dating from medieval times developed from a small Illyrian stronghold to Royal Castles and finally to a Fortress during Ottoman wars.
Kliss Fortress was chosen as a location of "Meereen" in the HBO fantasy drama "Game of Thrones ". It sits majestically on a pass that separates two mountains overlooking Split and the Dalmatian coast.
