HELLO THERE!
A Prayer flag is a colourful retangular cloth, often found strung in temples, along mountain ridges and high peaks in the himalayas. Traditional prayer flags include woodblock printed text and images.
The five colours represent the five elements and the Five Pure Lights. Blue symbolises the sky and space, white symbolises the air wind, red symbolises fire, green symbolises water and yellow the earth. According to Traditional Tibetan medicine, health and harmony are produced through the balance of the elements.
Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength and wisdom. They do not carry prayer to the gods, which is a misconception. The Tibetan believes the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into every space. Therefore, prayer flags bring benefit to all.
The centre of a flag features a srtong and powerful horse bearing three flaming jewels which symbolise the Buddha, The Buddha teachings and the Bhuddhist comunity, the three cornerstones of Tibetan tradition. Surrounded by traditional mantras. Additionally each corner of the flag is adornned with one of the Four Dignities: the Dragon, The Garuda, the Tiger and the Snow lion, four powerful animals.
