KAYAN

"This is Burma, and it will be quite unlike any land you know about."

rudyard Kipling - Letters from the East, 1898

HELLO THERE!

The Kayan people are a subgroup of Red Karen, Tibeto-burman ethnic minority of Myanmar (Burma).

Women of the Kayan tribes identify themselves for their form of dress and are well known for wearing neck rings, brass coils that are placed, appearing to lenghten the neck. Girls start to wear them when they are around 5 years old . Over the years the coil is replaced and more turns are added. After 10 or more years of continuous wear, the collar feels like an integral part of the body.

Kayan women say that the purpose for wearing the rings is cultural identity.

Kayan is a very small ethnic group, some living at ywama village, on the shores of Inle lake, Shan State of Myanmar (Burma).
