Altiplanic Lagoons are lakes high above sea level The very definition of which is "high plain", an area between the peaks of the Andes in South America.
Laguna Colorada or Red Lagoon is a shallow mineral salt lake. It contains borax, whose white colour contrasts with the reddish colour of its waters, which is caused by sediments and the pigmentation of some algae.
Laguna Verde or green lagoon, has mineral suspensions of arsenic and other minerals which render colour to the lake waters. Its colour varies from dark emerald to turquoise depending on the disturbance caused to sediments in the lake by winds.
Laguna Blanca or white lagoon is shallow mineral salt lake, the characteristic of white colour is caused by the high amount of minerals suspended in it.
Laguna Hedionda or stinking lagoon is a salt lake notable for various migratory species of pink and white flamingos.
