CAMEL FAIR WANDERERS

India's rich culture, tradition and spirituality

in an spectacle of colours and rituals

HELLO THERE!

Pushkar, located on the edge of Thar Desert in the state of Rajasthan holds an annual Camel fair. The camels are dressed up, paraded, shaved, entered into beauty contests, raced, made to dance and traded. A Huge Carnival is held with an array of musicians, magicians, dancers, acrobats, snake charmers, camel traders and villagers from all over India. Pilgrims come to this festival to bathe in the holy waters of Pushkar's Lake and to be absolved of their sins.

Like most indian states, Rajasthan has a number of local tribes who live outside the social mainstream and many are nomadic. The most promenient are the Kalbeliyas, they discovered how to charm snakes and they are used to sing and dance, living on the margins of society. The Bophas are a green eyed tribe of nomads who used to work as entertainers for the maharajas, and to this day make a living as itinerant poets and storytellers.
