Burning man
"We take people to the threshold of religion, our aim is to induce immediate experience that is beyond the odd, beyond the strange, and beyond the weird. it verges on the wholy other."
Larry Harvey
HELLO THERE!
Burning Man is an Art and Culture festival held at Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
"Black Rock city" is a temporary community erected on a dry lake known as "The Playa". Tens of thousands of people gather from all over the world annually to create a temporary metropolis, an uthopian society with ten Principles that reflect the community's Ethos and Culture: where Everyone is welcome. It is devoted to gift giving, encourages self reliance and self expression; cooperate, collaborate and participate ethics;a civil society leaving no physical traces and respecting the environment. The touchstone of value in the culture is perhaps immediacy, overcoming barriers that stand between one and the recognition of their innerselves, the reality of those around participating in this nurturing and meaningful experience.
Some describe it as being like landing on another planet populated by welcoming, friendly, artistic people with an unique culture and code of behaviour.
Fire Art is part of the paramount fabric of Burning Man which is incorporated into Art installations, Theme camps and many performances.
The Pinacle is the exciting burning of "The Man" followed by the Nostalic burning of "The Temple" on the sunday which is a solemn ritual with tears of gratitude and wonder, a time for reflection and remembrance.
"The temple " shows the spiritual dimension of Burning man which inspires a sense of wonder. It reflects the joy of the community, togetherness with sacredness, solemnity, a sense of remembrance, grief and renewal which contrast with the overall feeling of the event. It is that contrast that helps to define the comunity as one.
The Desert provides a harsh environment and dealing with the elements can be challenging. The Heat, the cold and the Dust. "Burners" embrace them as they are all dominant parts of the experience.
